“Art
is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has
known.” Oscar Wilde
Roger Cummiskey paintings capture moments of
quiet intensity and undiscovered beauty. His use of primary
colours lends an air of nostalgia to his pictures, which distinguishes
his work and creates a sense of timelessness. His compositions
often capture the viewer's attention with their simple, recognizable
scenes, drawing the viewer's attention to unexpected textures,
nuances of shadow and brilliant bits of light.
Roger has developed a unique individual style and specializes
in paintings that take their themes and titles from the wanderings
and writings of James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Miguel de Cervantes
and other Literary and Historical personalities. He is a recognized
Joycean artist.
From Dublin, in Ireland, he now lives and works in Mijas
Costa, Spain where he says he is able to find the "daily
poetry" which inspires his art. His works have been exhibited
in Australia, China, Finland, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden,
UK, USA, and in many national and private shows in Ireland.
Roger Cummiskey's paintings have represented Ireland at the
Florence Biennale and also at International Art Exhibitions
in London, Stockholm and New York.
James Joyce wrote Ecce Puer in 1932 after the death of his
father, John Joyce. James was guilt ridden for not having
responded to his father's request for him to visit Ireland
before the old man died. The poem also celebrates the birth
of his grandson Stephen James Joyce on February 15th 1932.
It is a very sad and poignant poem. Stephen is still alive
and well and living in Paris.
Shakespeare and Co., Paris, first published Pomes Penyeach,
by James Joyce, in 1927. Ecce Puer was added to later editions.
An American, Sylvia Beach, who was a patron of Joyce, owned
this publishing business and bookshop that is still open today
on the Rue de LOdeon in Paris. She was the first publisher
of Ulysses in 1922.
Joyce also published 36 short poems entitled Chamber Music.
I have painted a series of James Joyce's Poems in watercolours
using waterproof ink on hand made Indian paper where I have
given the paper an aged appearance. Each poem is given its
date of composition.
The original painting "Ecce Puer" was auctioned
at the Dorchester Hotel in London last year for the charity,
Cooperation Ireland.
