Nanny
Gerty
The
subject for this painting comes from the character
Gerty McDowell from James Joyce's (1882-1941)
classic Ulysses. Gerty plays a sexual part with
a difference, which for the period -1904 –
was considered quite risqué. She acts out
the seductress while the children in her care
are playing on the beach at Sandymount and she
rests on a rock before it is brought to the readers
attention that one of her legs was shorter than
the other!
This
original watercolour painting is based on an idea
taken from the writings and wanderings of James
Joyce. ©RogerCummiskey.com
