Nanny Gerty

The subject for this painting comes from the character Gerty McDowell from James Joyce's (1882-1941) classic Ulysses. Gerty plays a sexual part with a difference, which for the period -1904 – was considered quite risqué. She acts out the seductress while the children in her care are playing on the beach at Sandymount and she rests on a rock before it is brought to the readers attention that one of her legs was shorter than the other!
