Gibraltar
Remembered
There
are quite a number of references to Spain and
the Andalusian women in Molly Bloom's soliloquy
at the end, last 30 pages, of Ulysses, by James
Joyce.
In
this sequence Molly is reminiscing on her early
experiences and her first taste of sexuality with
a serving British soldier while she lived with
her father in Gibraltar. She shared this experience
while leaning against a Moorish wall in the old
town of Gibraltar.
The
whole passage is quite explicit in nature and
uses the "stream of consciousness" technique,
which Joyce brought to literature for the first
time. The section is referred to as Molly Bloom's
soliloquy or the Penelope episode/chapter. ©2006.
