Commentary:
Gerty’s
Care
The
subject for this painting is derived from the
character, Gerty McDowell, from James Joyce’s
(1882-1941) Ulysses. The children in the painting
suggest those whom Gerty and her friend, Cissy,
were looking after on Sandymount Beach in Dublin
on 16th June 1904 - Bloomsday.
My
interpretation is loosely based on the children
playing on the beach in tranquil, idyllic, peaceful
and uncluttered surroundings in the safety of
the very tidal Sandymount Beach.
This
watercolour painting is based on an original idea
taken from the writings and wanderings of James
Joyce. ©
